An epidemic of hepatitis C virus infection while treating endemic infectious diseases in Equatorial Africa more than a half century ago: did it also jump-start the AIDS pandemic?

چکیده
Two articles in this issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases by Pépin et al [1, 2] report how intravenous and intramuscular prophylaxis and treatment of endemic infectious diseases led to hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human T lymphotropic virus (HTLV)–1 infection in Equatorial Africa. Both of the rural areas, in southeast Central Africa Republic (where there was a high incidence of trypanosomiasis) [2] and in southern Cameroon (where there was extensive use of parenteral therapy for malaria and other endemic infectious diseases) [1], are near sites where SIVcpz, believed to be the precursor of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)–1, has been isolated from chimpanzees [3, 4]. Thus, they hypothesize that these iatrogenic exposures may have jump-started the HIV pandemic from a few isolated cases of infected persons exposed to “bush meat.”

Comparative population dynamics of HIV-1 subtypes B and C: subtype-specific differences in patterns of epidemic growth.
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pandemic continues to grow at an alarming rate, with a further 5 million new infections in 2003. Some 3.5 million of these were in sub-Saharan Africa, where approximately 70% of the world's HIV-positive population resides. In contrast, the spread of HIV in high-income countries has slowed since its discovery in the 1980s, and in regions such as Western Eur...

Recurrent panniculitis in a patient receiving protease inhibitor therapy for human immu-nodeficiency virus infection. Some two decades into the, predominantly heterosexual, HIV epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa, we have yet to challenge the epidemic in a concerted fashion in perhaps its most pertinent population. Not only has little intervention research been carried out on adolescents in sub-Saha...
متن کاملHepatitis E Virus Seroprevalence and Viremia in Hemodialysis and HIV Infected Patients in Iran
Background and Aims: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is usually a self-limited viral disease that causes acute hepatitis and may progress to chronic hepatitis in immunosuppressed individuals. It seems that hemodialysis patients and HIV infected people are more exposed to HEV infection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the extent of HEV infection in hemodialysis and HIV infected patients ...
متن کاملStability Analysis of a Fractional Order Model of HIV virus and AIDS Infection in the Community
In this paper a non-linear model with fractional order is presented for analyzing and controlling the spread of HIV virus. Both the disease-free equilibrium and the endemic equilibrium are found and their stability is discussed. The basic reproduction number , which is a function of the constant parameters in the model, plays an essential role in the stability of the ...
